Visual Difference between AC and DC Power

Alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) are two types of current in electricity. The basic difference between AC and DC current is that AC current reverses its direction while flowing in a circuit, while DC current does not change its direction. The alternating current generates frequency while direct current has zero frequency.

3. If an object is placed between the tester and the conductor (cable)?*

The electric field will be blocked and the Tester will not indicate even though there power on the conductor.

The signal will be enhanced.

4. Is there an electric field on metal armoured or screened cable?*

No there is no electric field if the cable is armoured.

5. The Electric field is represented visually in these drawings. Which orientation is the correct direction the tester is to be used?*

6. Depending on the model of the tester the Industrial DC80 has 8 sensitivity setting and the Fire and Rescue DC50 Tester has 2 sensitivity settings. Why do you need different settings?*

The higher the power the larger the electric field. Having lower sensitivity settings allows the user of the device to get closer to the power source before the device indicates the presence of electricity.

7. Why do you need to touch the cap (large head area) of the DC tester?*

Touching the cap with your hand will ground the device and remove static electricity build up.

8. The DC tester is directional, this means the tester must be pointed directly at the application.*

9. What is a Null Field?*

A Null field is where a power source is placed on a conductor and an electrical field is produced, When two electric fields are in close proximity to one another, one electric field can over power the other and produces no field at all.

The field is strongest.

10. What do you do if the cable you are approaching is in or near another cable, Or in an enclosed space?*

Be very aware that on DC power null fields do exist. Approach with caution and use the lower sensitivity settings to get closer to the conductor to determine if power is present.

11. Can a NULL FIELD be caused by close proximity to a more powerful voltage in close proximity?*

12. Will the tester pick up and indicate if there is a null field?*

Yes

13. An electric field is generated from a metal conductor with voltage passing thru it, will the tester indicates when it picks up that electric field?*
